special labor day edition: the art of the essay

Over the weekend, please post an essay to your blog (title: WRITING ABOUT LIFE AND DEATH) in which you respond to the following prompt:

As we have discussed in class, an allegory uses characters and a narrative structure to help the reader think about abstract concepts.  In an essay of no less than four paragraphs, explain how the Katha Upanishad qualifies as an allegory.  You may want to include: the abstract themes of religion and death; how death appears as a character; how Nachiketa symbolizes what's best about being a teenager; and anything else that supports your main points.  If you get confused or need help, please feel free to reach out to a friend, comment to this post, or send me an email over the weekend.  But whatever you do, don't wait until the last minute!

  1. An allegory is a story that uses characters and events to represent abstract ideas (like love or death). Theme is the central message of a story.
